Snow forecast Chamonix

There should be another very weak front passing over us on New Year's Eve, with only 5cm of snow forecast in the mountains, but more unsettled weather is supposed to come our way after the weekend, with some stronger weather systems than we have seen in weeks!

Right now at Flegere, the Index is once again closed to skiers, due to not enough snow for the lower section of the piste. The lift is still open for sightseeing, and very limited ski touring. The small lifts are running though, with blue and green pistes (Evettes and Trappe), but it is very busy this week with New Year crowds, and there are a lot of stones on the pistes, especially at the end of the day. It was pretty cool to be up there in the sunshine, though, with a light wind and great views.

The Brevent still has more skiable pistes open, with the top lift still just about skiable, and Le Tour still has the lower piste open. Conditions at the Grands Montets have probably not changed much in the last few days - and it is still a really bad idea to ski off the piste on the glacier, due to hidden weak snow bridges (see my last snow report). So, the skiing continues, and even though it is limited and a bit stony/icy, we are having fun in the Chamonix mountains. When it does next snow big, it will take some time for it to create a decent snowpack over the rocks, and it will be very unstable for avalanches like last winter, but the pistes will be way better than they are now!
